Philosophy

      Since Richwood Middle School is located in a rural area, the school believes that students should be intellectually, socially and culturally educated.  A goal of the educational program is to positively reinforce self-perception.  Moral and ethical values including courtesy, honesty and respect for peers, teachers, and family are to be taught.  Most importantly, the school stresses that students should attend regularly to achieve in the basic program of instruction from which all students may acquire the academic, social and vocational skills needed to prepare for further education and the world of work.

      To strengthen the learning atmosphere the parents and the community must be actively involved.  The educational program must take place in a safe school which is orderly, well-disciplined and free of drugs.

      We encourage all students and their parents to become essentially involved in school life, both academic and extracurricular activities, to insure maximum success for all students .  The public is welcome to visit our school at any time.

Student Code of Conduct  andStudent Discipline Procedures

The Nicholas County Board of Education recognizes the need of students, teachers, administrators and other school personnel to have an orderly, safe, and stimulating educational environment. Promoting effective discipline in our schools requires a comprehensive program supported by everyone in the school organization, parents, or guardians and the community. In order to assure that schools are able to address these needs, the West Virginia Board of Education provides in Section 4 of SBE Policy 4373 the Student Code of Conduct.

The code of conduct applies to all student enrolled in the public schools in West Virginia. This policy does not supersede any rights granted to special education students by Federal or State laws of other Board of Education policy.

West Virginia State Code of Student Conduct

  1. Attend school faithfully, complete his/her assignments on time and work to his/her potential.
  2. Behave in a manner that does not disrupt classroom learning or the operation of the school.
  3. Obey teachers and principals and others in authority.
  4. Refrain from aggressive or threatening behavior toward fellow students, teachers, and other school staff.
  5. Refrain from the possession or use of any weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products.

RMS Dress Code

RMS has a constant goal of educational excellence. Proper school attire is important in achieving this goal. Students will not dress or groom in a manner that disrupts the educational process or is detrimental to the health, safety or welfare of an individual student and others. Students will not dress in a manner that is distractive or indecent, to the extent that it interferes with the teaching and learning process, including wearing any apparel that displays or promotes any drug-, alcohol- or tobacco-related product that is prohibited in school buildings, on school grounds, in school-leased or owned vehicles, and at all school-affiliated functions. Specifically, students are not to wear:

1. Clothes that display the Rebel flag. Clothes that have holes in the material, chains/jewelry/bracelets/etc. that can be used as a weapon. Halter tops, tube tops, cut-off shirts, tank tops, muscle shirts, or any clothing which exposes the navel or midriff;

2. Hats, caps, or distracting headwear inside the building;

3. Shorts shorter than finger length;

4. "Sagging" - pants must fit up around the waist;

5. Shredded or mesh shirts must have clothing underneath.

Any student who comes to school wearing clothing which is deemed to be inappropriate will be sent to see the principals. They will then be isolated from the student body or suspended until such a time when they can get appropriate clothing to wear during the school day. Students will be suspended for repeated offenses of the dress code. Due to health & safety reasons, body piercing other than ears will not be tolerated.

CHECKING IN/OUT

All students who arrive at school after the beginning of first period should check in at the office and with their homeroom teacher with a written excuse as to why they are late before going to class. Students who are arriving on a bus are an exception to this. However, students should check in the office to have their name removed from the absence list. Visiting students are not allowed to attend classes. Parents should check with the principal before visiting classes.

RMS has a closed campus policy. When it becomes necessary for a student to leave school during the school day, the parent must come to the school and pick up the student or notify the school of others permitted to pick up their student. PLEASE SIGN OUT IN THE SIGN OUT BOOK LOCATED AT THE FRONT DESK. Parents are to notify the school by phone or note indicating the person(s) to pick up the student; otherwise, the student will not be released. Promotion/Credit Policy

      Promotion from one grade to the next is dependent upon a student's grades.  For each class that a student earns a yearly grade of 65 or above, he/she earns one credit.  If the student earns five or more credits in a year with three of these credits coming from the area of math, science, social studies, grammar, and/or reading/spelling he/she will be promoted.

Guidance/Counseling

     RMS has one guidance counselor who provides a comprehensive guidance and  counseling program.  Students wanting to see a counselor can sign the chalkboard in the counselor's office or let one of their teachers know.

I WAS ABSENT! Now What Do I Have To Do?

A note from a parent or guardian is required for each absence since the parent is accountable under state law. The note should contain the student’s name, date of absences,

reason for absence, and the parent or guardian’s signature. A doctor’s note should be obtained if the student visited a doctor during his/her absence. The note needs to be presented to Mr. Collins; he will sign it, and the student will then take the note to his/her homeroom teacher.

Homework: The responsibility for make-up work after an excused absence rest entirely with the student. Students have one day for every day absent to make up their work.

Tardy Policy: The following is the RMS’s tardy policy: 1. Four (4) tardies count as one absence in that class; 2. When a student receives five (5) tardies then he/she will be placed on In-School suspension.
